Castlevania
Three generations of whip, one eternal night, and the Count who started it all.
Castlevania is Konami's long-running gothic action-platformer franchise, a sprawling saga of vampire hunters, cursed bloodlines, and a centuries-old war against the undead. Since its debut in 1986, the series has become a pillar of retro gaming culture, celebrated for its dark castle labyrinths, orchestral and gothic-rock soundtracks, and a cast of Belmonts who swing a whip across generations to keep the Count at bay.
In the Super Smash Bros. universe, Castlevania brings a distinctly gothic, old-world energy to the roster. The franchise's presence—spanning Alucard, Simon Belmont, and Richter Belmont—adds a flavor of Victorian-era vampire lore and whip-cracking combat that feels right at home among Smash's eclectic mix of heroes, monsters, and mascots.

Lore & Background
At the heart of Castlevania's mythology is a cycle of vengeance. Dracula, the ancient vampire lord, periodically rises to plunge the world into darkness, and each time a member of the Belmont bloodline—descendants of the original vampire hunter—must journey into his ever-changing castle to put him down. Simon Belmont, the series' original protagonist, represents the classic era: a broad-shouldered hunter in a long coat, swinging the legendary Vampire Killer whip through torch-lit corridors and fending off gorgons, medusas, and the Count himself.
Richter Belmont, Simon's distant descendant, carries the torch into the darker, more atmospheric era of Symphony of the Night. His story is one of personal loss and legacy, navigating a castle that shifts and breathes like a living organism. Alucard—Dracula's own son, a vampire who walks the line between monster and man—adds a layer of moral ambiguity, fighting alongside the very hunters who would destroy his father.
Together, the three embody the franchise's core tension: the Belmonts' duty to protect the living against the undead, and the tragic, inescapable bloodline that binds them all to the castle's curse.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the broken rose windows of the upper gallery, scattering candlelight across centuries of dust. Simon stood at the head of the corridor, his coat whipping in the draft, the Vampire Killer coiled at his hip like a sleeping serpent. Behind him, Richter leaned against a crumbling arch, arms crossed, watching the shadows that pooled too thickly in the far alcove. And there, on the balcony above, Alucard's pale fingers traced the cold stone railing, a faint smile playing at his lips as he watched the two hunters ready themselves for a fight none of them truly wanted. The castle groaned. Somewhere below, a door that had been sealed for two hundred years began, very slowly, to open.
Reader's Guide
Castlevania's crossover footprint in Smash is anchored by three fighters, each representing a different era of the franchise. Alucard made his Smash debut as downloadable content in Brawl (2009), bringing his dark, agile vampire combat and a distinctive shadowy visual style. He returned in Ultimate, where he is joined by Simon Belmont and Richter Belmont, giving players access to the full Belmont lineage in a single game.
All three fighters lean on the franchise's signature whip-based combat, with Simon's moveset emphasizing raw power and straightforward strikes, Richter's favoring a more fluid, acrobatic style, and Alucard's incorporating shadowy, vampiric flair. Their special moves and taunts draw on iconic imagery from their respective games—whip-cracking, castle corridors, and the ever-present threat of the Count.
The franchise's gothic aesthetic also bleeds into Smash's broader atmosphere. The dark, orchestral tone of Castlevania's music finds a natural echo in the series' more dramatic battle themes, and the Belmonts' presence alongside characters like Mario or Link creates a fun contrast between lighthearted platforming and gothic horror. For fans, seeing Simon swing his whip while a Koopa Troopa bounces off a crumbling castle wall is a small, perfect collision of worlds that only Smash can deliver.
The crossover identity is strengthened by the fact that these characters carry their own internal lore—generations of duty, a cursed castle, a vampire lord who never truly stays dead—making them feel like they belong to a deeper narrative even within the chaotic, all-star context of Smash.
