Magic

Grab the staff, shield up, and rain arcane fireballs on everyone in the blast zone.

Magic

Magic is a pickup item in the Super Smash Bros. series that temporarily transforms the character who grabs it into a spellcaster. Upon collecting it, the fighter wields a glowing staff and gains access to two core abilities: launching homing-style energy projectiles and projecting a shimmering magical barrier around themselves. It is one of the more versatile utility items in the roster, blending offense, defense, and crowd control into a single, time-limited power-up.

Present in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Magic serves as a classic mid-fight swing item. It rewards players who can juggle its offensive and defensive tools, while its expiration timer keeps the chaos temporary and the match's momentum shifting.

Lore & Background

In the multiverse of Smash, the staff that accompanies the Magic item is never tied to a single character's backstory. It simply appears as a shimmering, rune-etched rod that materializes alongside a soft blue glow when a fighter's hands close around it. The design language draws from the broader fantasy tropes the series loves to mash together: a wizard's tool dropped into the hands of a plumber, a samurai, or a robot, creating the same delightful absurdity that defines the franchise.

The magic shield that projects around the user is a translucent, hexagonal barrier that hums with low-frequency energy. It does not block melee attacks the way a physical shield would, but it reliably intercepts and reflects projectiles—bombs, fireballs, even the heavier energy blasts of characters like Bowser or Ganondorf. This makes Magic a surprisingly effective equalizer in team-based or free-for-all matches where projectile spam dominates the airspace.

The staff's projectiles are small, arcing orbs of blue-violet energy that travel in a gentle upward curve before dropping. They are not the hardest-hitting attacks in the game, but their consistent spacing and the ability to fire them while airborne give a grounded character a temporary aerial reach they would not otherwise have. When the timer runs out, the staff dissolves into a puff of sparkles and the shield fades, leaving the fighter to return to their base kit with a brief moment of vulnerability.

In Their Own Story

The stage was a crumbling arena of floating stone, and the match had ground down to two survivors: a tired plumber and a fox with a tail full of static. The plumber had been losing every clash, getting launched wide every time they met in the air. Then, from the side of the stage, a soft chime rang out and a glowing staff rolled across the cracked floor.

The fox lunged first, snatching it up. Instantly, a hexagonal barrier of pale blue light wrapped around their body, and the staff's tip flared violet. They didn't even need to close the distance. From the edge, they fired three slow, arcing orbs toward the plumber, who was trying to recover. The first orb clipped the plumber's shoulder—enough to wobble their trajectory. The second they ducked. The third, they couldn't.

The plumber hit the ground hard, the shield around them flickering and dying in the same breath. For one long second, the fox stood at the edge, staff raised, the barrier humming. Then the sparkles came. The staff dissolved. The shield went dark. And the match, as always, reset to a coin flip.

Reader's Guide

Pick up the Magic item and your character immediately gains a staff in their hands and a translucent blue shield around their body. To fire a projectile, press your primary attack button (A). The orb arcs gently upward and forward, dealing modest knockback on hit. You can fire while grounded, airborne, or even while recovering off-stage, which is where the item shines most—giving a character a recovery tool they do not normally have.

The shield is your defensive anchor. It blocks and reflects incoming projectiles, sending them back toward the thrower. It does NOT block melee hits, grabs, or throws, so do not mistake it for a physical guard. If an opponent dashes in for a close-range combo, the shield will not save you.

The magic lasts for a limited window (roughly ten to fifteen seconds depending on the title). Once it expires, the staff and shield vanish simultaneously, leaving you with no projectile option and no barrier. Plan your aggression before the timer ends.

In competitive play, Magic is a situational item. In a 4-player free-for-all with heavy projectile users, it can swing a round. In a 1v1 ranked match, it is a minor tempo shift—useful for a quick zone or a recovery assist, but not a game-changer. Its biggest strategic value is forcing opponents to respect your space for a few seconds, buying you a window to reposition or land a follow-up hit.
