Meta Knight

A blue knight's blade cuts through the cosmos, loyal to the light and sharp as a rival's ambition.

Meta Knight

Meta Knight is a towering blue-armored knight from the Kid Icarus franchise who serves as one of the most beloved mentor-and-rival figures in Nintendo's roster. In the Smash Bros. series, he fights as a full playable character, bringing his signature sword work, cape-flourishing aerials, and commanding presence to the battlefield. His design draws heavily on his Kid Icarus: Uprising iteration, where he is depicted as a stoic, plumed knight loyal to the Tower of the Gods and the young hero Pit.

Lore & Background

Meta Knight is a knight of the Tower of the Gods, a celestial fortress that stands as the seat of divine authority in the Kid Icarus world. He is distinguished by his deep blue armor, flowing cape, and the ornate plumed helmet that conceals his face. His sword, the Falchion, is both a weapon of war and a symbol of his oath to protect the mortal realm from the forces of Hades and the Fallen. He commands the Halberd, a sleek airship that serves as his mobile base of operations.

In Their Own Story

The Halberd hung motionless above a shattered moon, its engines dim, its hull scarred by the last volley of Fallen spears. Inside the cockpit, Meta Knight sat rigid, one gauntleted hand resting on the Falchion's pommel, the other gripping the yoke. The stars beyond the viewport were wrong—too few, too cold, as though the sky itself had been chipped away. A comm crackle broke the silence. A young voice, breathless and unsteady, called his name. He did not turn. He did not need to. He could feel the weight of that voice the way he felt the weight of his own cape in zero gravity. After a long moment, he reached for the throttle. The engines roared back to life, blue fire licking the dark. He spoke, low and steady, the way he always did when the world was falling and someone still expected him to catch it. "Hold your line, Pit. I'm coming."

Reader's Guide

FIGHTER DOSSIER: META KNIGHT

Source Franchise: Kid Icarus (Kid Icarus: Uprising) Unlock Method: Available as a standard roster fighter in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. No special unlock conditions required in Ultimate; in the 3DS/Wii U version he is part of the base roster.

NEUTRAL ATTACKS Neutral attack: A three-hit sword combo. The first two are quick horizontal slashes; the third is a longer, more damaging swing that can be angled. The combo has moderate range and good spacing utility. Dash attack: A forward lunging sword slash with a brief wind-up. Hits at a mid-range arc and can be used to punish opponents who are close after a missed attack.

AERIALS Forward aerial: A diagonal downward sword slash. Decent range, good for approaching from above. Back aerial: A backward sword swing. Useful for spacing and hitting opponents behind you. Up aerial: An upward sword slash. Moderate damage, can be used to pop opponents off the ground. Down aerial: A downward sword strike. Hits below you with a slight forward drift.

SMASH ATTACKS Forward smash: A powerful horizontal sword swing with a noticeable wind-up. High damage on full charge, strong knockback, but punishable if whiffed. Up smash: An upward sword slash. Decent range, good for juggling setups. Down smash: A wide, sweeping slash in front of him. Covers a large horizontal area, useful for zoning.

GRABS Grab: A short-range grab with a quick follow-up. Forward throw: A sword-assisted toss that sends the opponent forward. Back throw: A backward toss. Up throw: An upward toss with a sword flourish. Down throw: A downward slam.

SPECIAL MOVES Side Special (Sword Tornado): Meta Knight spins in a tight circle, his sword creating a damaging arc around him. Can be used for short-range defense and to hit multiple opponents in tight spaces. Up Special (Star Dash): Meta Knight dashes upward in a burst, leaving a star-shaped trail. Provides strong vertical recovery and can be angled slightly. A reliable get-home move. Down Special: A forward sword slash with a brief charge. Functions as a mid-range poke or a short-range burst depending on timing.

ALTERNATE COSTUMES Meta Knight carries several alternate palettes in Smash, including variations on his cape color (red, green, purple, white) and minor helmet/plume adjustments. These are cosmetic and do not affect gameplay.

UNIQUE MECHANICS & COMBO NOTES Meta Knight is a medium-to-heavyweight fighter, meaning he has notable momentum and is harder to knock off-stage than lighter characters. His sword-based moveset gives him strong point-blank pressure but leaves him vulnerable at extended range. His Star Dash recovery is reliable but not the longest in the game; players should manage their stock carefully. His Sword Tornado is a defensive tool that can interrupt grabs and short-range attacks. Combo-wise, his neutral attack chain into an aerial or smash is a common starter. His cape and plume make his hitbox slightly larger than it visually appears, a quirk players must account for in close-quarters play.
