Kirby
Small, pink, and absolutely not to be underestimated.
Kirby is the round, pink, impossibly cheerful protagonist of the long-running Kirby franchise, first developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in 1992. In the Super Smash Bros. series he appears as a full playable fighter, bringing his signature inhale-and-copy mechanic to the stage alongside the rest of the roster. As one of the lightest characters in the game, he trades raw power for blistering speed, a high jump, and a unique aerial float that lets him hover in mid-air for a brief window of extra recovery.
Fans adore Kirby for the contrast between his tiny, soft appearance and his genuinely dangerous toolkit. The ability to inhale an opponent, copy their special move, or simply spit them back out as a projectile makes every match feel unpredictable. He is, in the eyes of the community, the ultimate underdog who somehow keeps punching above his weight class.

Lore & Background
Kirby hails from the whimsical land of Pop Star, a bright, candy-colored world nestled within the broader Dream Land. He is a small, spherical pink being of unknown species who lives a quiet life until some great threat—be it a rogue penguin king, a shadowy void, or an interdimensional invader—puts his home in peril. Rather than wielding a sword or a gun, Kirby's signature response is to open his mouth wide, inhale the threat whole, and either swallow it for sustenance or absorb its power, temporarily gaining a new ability that reshapes his entire fighting style.
His world is populated by colorful, often comical antagonists, but the most recurring figures in his orbit are King Dedede, the pompous penguin monarch of Pop Star, and Meta Knight, a brooding, helmeted knight whose loyalties shift from game to game. Despite the occasional rivalry, all three share a bond forged through countless battles against forces that would unmake their home. Across dozens of titles spanning platformers, spin-offs, and crossovers, Kirby's story is one of a small, gentle soul who repeatedly stands between his friends and annihilation—and wins, usually by turning the enemy's own power against them.
In the Smash Bros. crossover, Kirby represents the entire spirit of the Kirby franchise: accessibility, charm, and the idea that the smallest fighter on the stage can still take down the biggest names with the right combination of speed, creativity, and a well-timed inhale.
In Their Own Story
The sky over Pop Star was the color of tangerine juice, and the little pink figure stood at the edge of the Dream Land's floating garden, watching clouds drift past like slow, cotton-candy ships. Somewhere beyond the horizon, the Void was stirring again—its cold fingers reaching through the cracks in reality. Kirby didn't feel fear. He felt hunger. He took a deep breath, and the air around him swirled inward, pulling a stray boulder, a flock of startled birds, and a half-eaten sandwich into his mouth. He swallowed. The boulder became a hammer. The birds became wings. The sandwich… well, the sandwich was just a sandwich.
He floated upward, tiny and round against the vast and darkening sky, and smiled. The Void could come. It had never met a small, pink, very determined mouth before.
Reader's Guide
Name: Kirby Source franchise: Kirby (HAL Laboratory / Nintendo) Unlock method: Available from the start of the roster in all main-line Smash Bros. titles.
Neutrals & Specials: Kirby's neutral attack (B button) is his signature Inhale—he sucks in nearby enemies, projectiles, or items. He can then spit them out as a projectile, swallow them for a brief stat boost, or copy the enemy's special move. Side Special is Bump, a forward rolling charge that can grab and carry opponents. Up Special is Rocket Jump, a quick vertical hop. Down Special is Paralyze, a short-range stun that locks opponents in place for a moment.
Aerials & Smashes: Standard forward, up, and down aerials. Forward Smash is a short-range punch; Up Smash sweeps upward; Down Smash is a quick downward swing. Grabs include a standard grab, pummel, and four throw directions.
Unique mechanics: Kirby's recovery is Float—he can hover in mid-air for a limited duration, giving him a second chance after a missed jump. He can also ride on certain enemies, using them as a mobile platform. His low weight makes him extremely floaty and easy to knock off-stage, but his high top speed and jump height let him reposition quickly.
Alternate costumes: Several recolors in different hues (blue, green, yellow, purple, and others) with minor accessory variations.
