Puff
Tiny, pink, and puffed up with just enough bravado to knock you back.
Puff is a tiny, round, pink creature with a single large eye and a small, simple mouth, first introduced as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Classified as a 'baby' alongside other infant characters, Puff is one of the smallest and lightest combatants in the entire Smash roster, making it extraordinarily fragile yet uniquely mobile thanks to its signature inflation-and-deflation special move.
Despite its comically small stature and minimal damage output, Puff occupies a beloved niche in the community as the ultimate underdog. Its presence in Melee and Brawl—and its conspicuous absence from every subsequent mainline title—has made it a frequent subject of fan nostalgia and 'what if' speculation.

Lore & Background
In the ever-shifting geography of the Smash world, Puff is a creature of pure mystery. It does not belong to any recognizable franchise or planet; it simply *is*, a small pink orb with one wide, curious eye that bounces between stages as if it were born from the very air of the battlefield. Fans have theorized it is a primordial baby of the Smash dimension itself, a living spark of the chaotic energy that draws every fighter together.
Its relationship to the other 'babies' in the roster is deliberately vague. Puff shares the baby status—pickable, carryable, and vulnerable—but unlike its counterparts, it has no parent, no home world, and no origin story beyond the Smash arena. This deliberate blankness makes it a blank canvas for fan imagination, a little pink question mark that the developers never bothered to answer.
Puff's exclusion from later entries is often attributed to the practical difficulty of animating and balancing an ultra-tiny, ultra-light baby in a roster that grew increasingly large and complex. Yet its absence left a small but noticeable hole in the community's collective memory, a round pink dot that simply stopped appearing on the character-select screen.
In Their Own Story
The sky above the final stage was the pale, washed-out blue of a world that had no true sky. Puff bounced along the cracked tile floor, one eye wide, watching the titans crash and thunder above it. A fist the size of a boulder slammed down three meters to its left, sending a shockwave that sent Puff tumbling end over end. It landed with a soft *boop*, unharmed, almost amused.
A shadow fell over it. A giant hand—matt's, or maybe someone else's—closed gently around its round pink body. Puff did not struggle. It simply inflated, slowly, like a tiny balloon filling with warm air, and the hand released it with a soft *pfft*. Puff drifted upward on the exhalation, tiny and pink and utterly unbothered, and bounced off the ceiling with a cheerful little *boing* that no one heard over the roar of the crowd.
Reader's Guide
Puff's identity in gameplay is defined by two things: its extreme fragility and its Puff special (down special). The Puff move inflates Puff's body over roughly a second, then releases a radial burst of wind that knocks back nearby opponents. The inflation phase is Puff's only meaningful defensive tool—it briefly increases its hitbox and can interrupt light attacks—but the deflation burst is the real payoff, dealing modest damage with surprising knockback for a character this small.
As a baby character, Puff can be grabbed, carried, and tossed by other fighters. This is both a hazard (being flung across the stage with no control) and a bizarre mobility option in chaotic multiplayer. Puff's other moves are uniformly weak: its jab, tilts, and aerials deal very little damage, and its up special is a modest vertical hop. Its dash and air mobility are its strongest assets, letting it slip between attacks and reposition quickly.
Competitively, Puff is essentially non-viable. Its lack of damage, near-zero weight, and limited recovery make it a target in any serious match. But in casual 8-player brawls, Puff is a pure joy: a little pink pinball that bounces off everything, gets carried around by giants, and occasionally puffs up to send a nearby heavyweight spinning. It is the Smash Bros. equivalent of a tiny, round, pink daredevil.
Did You Know?
- Puff's down special is literally named 'Puff,' inflating its body before releasing a radial knockback burst—a move that is both its namesake and its most impactful attack.
- As a 'baby' character, Puff can be picked up, carried, and thrown by other fighters, a mechanic shared with other infant characters in Melee and Brawl.
- Puff is one of the lightest and smallest playable characters in the entire Super Smash Bros. series, making it extremely susceptible to even light attacks and stage hazards.
- Despite appearing in both Melee and Brawl, Puff was omitted from Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, making it one of the most notable casualties of roster culling.
